Ruthless Self-Improvement — Unmasking Our Inner ‘Asshole’ and Conquering Life

I love this shot. I’m gearing up for the Spartan Race, which also symbolizes everyday life with all its challenges. This race, along with our goals and dreams, may not be the World Championships or the Olympics, but it’s my own personal mountain to conquer, and I’m feeling fantastic and prepared for the challenge. There’s no difference between this challenge and any other task in our lives, no matter how mundane it might be.

Challenges manifest themselves in diverse ways. I thrive on keeping myself sharp and comfortably uncomfortable. Whether it’s the adrenaline rush of signing up for a race, seeking the truth, expressing my thoughts, or saying “I’m sorry,” I’m perpetually on the lookout for experiences that keep me in check. I’m constantly looking to understand my opposition’s perspective, shedding light on my blind spots, and ultimately becoming a better version of myself.

As I’m getting older, I’m gradually realizing that, in order to develop and foster meaningful relationships and an overall healthy lifestyle, I must be tough — not on others, but on myself. One example of this inner toughness is my unwavering commitment to facing the truth head-on, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. I willingly open myself up to constructive criticism, striving to see the world through others’ eyes.

When it comes to staying fit, I’ve developed an ability to be ruthless. Ruthless with the tireless inner voice trying to convince me that I’m not good enough… that I’m too tired… that it’s too early to work out… that eating junk food is acceptable. I’ve learned to become an inner critic, unrelenting in silencing that voice — the obstacle between me and my goals.

This image represents the fighter within me — the relentless, brutally honest, vulnerable, and yes, occasional asshole. These facets exist in all of us. We all harbor the power to channel the champion within. We’re all fighters and lovers, disciplined and lazy, truthful and dishonest. The key is to stand up to our inner voice, recognizing it as a saboteur of our goals and a would-be thief of our potential.

So, let’s rally together. Let’s give it our all and become the very best versions of ourselves. Let’s conquer those inner demons and emerge victorious on the other side of this adventure we call life!
